Spoon - Inside Out

So for this blog post we had to analyse a music video and the lyrics of the song. I had hard time picking one music video for this task because there are so many amazing music videos with deep metaphors, messages and superb visuals, but for now I went with one of my favorite “chill” songs, “Inside Out” by Spoon (the whole “They Want My Soul” album is great btw.). It’s super chill song to vibe to and the visuals in this video are trippy and weird so it’s something interesting to look at too!

 

The songs meaning is pretty straight forward.  A man has found his one true love and can’t seem to focus on anything else than her. Time seems to slow down every time he sees her (“Time gets distorted when there's intense gravity”) and he feels this immense traction to her (“There's intense gravity in you”) to the point that his life and all that he thinks about revolves around her, him just being a satellite orbiting her (“I'm just your satellite”). In the meantime there is a highly religious group trying to get this man to join them but the man refuses (“I don't got time for holy rollers, Though they may wash my feet And I won't be their soldier”). In the bible washing one's feet is a religious ritual, a pure person washes your sins away and joins you to their ranks as one. In the last verse the man refuses to even give them any of his time because they don’t complete him, only she and the love that he has for her completes him (“I don't make time for holy rollers, Mmm, there's only you I need, They do not make me complete”).

It's a pretty basic love song in its core but there is a lot of ways you could interpret the song. What I think the message boils down to is that none of the outside forces or the things that you get pushed into define you or complete you, only the ones that you truly care for do.

As for what’s happening in the video, I really don’t know. Maybe the rapture is happening in the world and the religious group is actually trying to save the man and he is being lured by this girl/thing? Or maybe the video is just depicting this religious group as this evil organization that is brainwashing the town, I’m not sure, your guess is as good as mine.
